  • Amanda Dye

“The issues of global poverty, child labor, women’s rights and AIDS had never seemed real to me until I fell in love with the children they were affecting.” -Amanda Dye, Executive Director of Energy of Hope At the age of 22, Amanda Dye, a graduate of Liberty High School and William Jewell College, founded a non profit orphanage in Zambia, Africa. Beginning with 6 beneficiaries in 2007, Energy of Hope has grown to serve nearly 60 beneficiaries in Africa, working hard to “empower orphans and vulnerable children to become agents of positive global change.” In addition to the creation and implementation of programs designed to provide lasting assistance to vulnerable children in Africa, Amanda has also created an educational progam in the United States to educate interested parties about the issues that children face in third world countries, which has been shared with thousands of people. Amanda has been recognized for her work by many different organizations, some of the most recent being provided a substantial scholarship from the American Humanics Foundation, as the first Kansas Citian to be featured on KCTV5’s endeavor, “Faces of Kansas City” and also being surpised as the recipient for a midwestern-regional Sertoma “Service to Mankind Award for 2010.” Her achievements in Africa have also been featured in Achieve Magazine, the Kansas City Star, and various other media outlets. However, she feels that her greatest blessing is reflected more in the positive difference her organization is able to make in the lives of the children that she is able to help, and by witnessing the kindness of the people who have supported her cause. Amanda continues to hold the position of executive director of Energy of Hope, and presides over operations in both Africa and the United States, and is intensely focused on changing the lives of vulnerable children in poverty, in Africa and around the world. If she were chosen to receive the donation from this event, she would use the proceeds to further help children through Energy of Hope to provide real and lasting help for vulnerable children in Africa. • Stan Hays
    Stan Hays
Many people have a passion for what they do, be it a their job, a hobby, family or their spirituality. Stan's passions are his family, barbecue and helping people. Stan works for a major insurance company as a Director of Personal Lines Sales during the week and is a competition barbecue cook on the weekends. His family makes up his team, County Line Smokers (www.countylinesmokers.com) and his children are involved in cooking kids competitions as well. Below is how Operation BBQ Relief, Inc. was born. The Story - In the wake of the EF5 tornado that devastated Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011, the barbecue community came together to help feed victims and first responders in Joplin. Stan was encouraged by his wife Amy to go to Joplin and help by cooking barbecue. Stan called good friend and competition barbecue cook Jeff Stith about going to Joplin. That morning after, Jeff had also been thinking that the barbecue community should somehow get involved. Stan and Jeff set out to try and get food to cook, find a location to set up and get their friends to come help. The word was quickly spread to the barbecue community and masses through Facebook and the news media. With assistance from Kookers Kare, another great barbecue organization that helped raise money and from other companies like Sam's Club, Farmers Insurance, OK Foods and many more Stan, Jeff and their barbecue friends were quickly up and running in Joplin and cooking food by Tuesday evening. Over the next eleven days in Joplin, the group cooked over 55,000 pounds of food or more than 120,000 meals. There is something comforting about barbecue shared with friends and family and in Joplin, the barbecue community came together like a big family. Stan has many new friends from his time in Joplin and he will never forget the feeling of helping those families in need of a good meal. Because Stan is passionate about helping others in need, working to build a new non-profit relief organization fits right in to his purpose in life. You can learn more about Operation BBQ Relief at: www.OperationBBQRelief.org or www.facebook.com/operationbbqrelief. Please visit the Web site and register on the registration tab if you are interested in volunteering. You can also donate to the organization on the Web site.

  • Nick Wright
    Nick Wright
I am a lifelong Kansas Citian except for a 4 year trip to Syracuse where I majored in Broadcast Journalism at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Since I was a child I always knew I wanted to talk about sports on the radio and am absolutely blessed to be able to live my dream every day, and to be able to do it in my hometown. I started at 610 KCSP the week I graduated from Syracuse back in May of 2007, and over the past four and a half years have moved from doing weekends, to doing nights, to doing middays, to where I am now, hosting, “What’s Wright with Nick Wright” every weekday afternoon from 2pm-6pm. While talking sports, and hopefully entertaining people during their work day, is fulfilling and incredibly enjoyable, I also try to talk about real life issues, especially those pertaining to Kansas City. I love my hometown, but I fear it is breaking down at its core due to an underfunded public school system without a consistent leader, rampant gun violence, and far too many fatherless and leaderless children. That’s why I am very involved in devoted to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kansas City and would ask that even if you choose to vote for one of the many other qualified nominees (I’m voting for Anthony Spino) if you could donate money, or more importantly, time to BBBSKC.org, that’d be wonderful.
